Emerging Themes In Gaga's Video

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga, is an American singing, songwriter, record producer and a dancer. Lady Gaga started her career as a singer in 2005, and from there, her career never ceased to surprise her fans. Her initial stage partner, Lady Starlight, a performance artist who helped mold her on-stage persona. Past successes and failures led Lady Gaga to take a chance on unusual and provocative performances, which is what makes her stand out amongst all other artists up to this day.

As we all have observe, Lady Gaga has carved out quite an interesting niche for herself in our world's music industry. She has intrigued and perhaps disgusted us with her choice in wardrobe and stupefied us with some of her lyrics and music videos. This blog post will focus supremely on her videos and what emerging themes that one can see if one watches them all consecutively.

Gaga’s starts off with her debut video “Just Dance” featuring Colby O’Donis in an already risqué fashion. She features the basic themes and images that any pop star exudes in today’s world and those are of the party scene and the video progressively getting more sexual as it goes on. One thing that stands out is her choice in outfit where she sports a disco ball styled bra.

Most of the earlier videos we see from her are mostly similar to others’ where she and her cast wear revealing clothing and seem to promote sexual activity. A few marketing schemes start to emerge as we watch her videos. Several of them consistently broadcast products of BeatsbyDre, a good that is used primarily for music consumers.

Another repeating image that we see is a pair of mysterious Dalmatians.  They appear in the background of “Poker Face”, “Eh, Eh”, “LoveGame”, and “Paparazzi”.
Perhaps they are just one of her trademarks images, though they did not appear in any other of her 14 present videos.

Though the first of her seemingly weird videos is Poker face, Gaga seems to outdo herself each time adding a more theatrical and movie-like dimension to her music videos. As her career progresses, we see Gaga adding a more religious flair on her artwork that some may find disrespectful and outrageous, but some excuse her behavior in the name of art.

In almost all of Lady Gaga's videos, there will be a scene where she is almost or fully naked. The themes she chooses to portray in her music videos are usually very provocative, open minded, and often contradict with the message of the video or the lyrics itself. In "Yoü and I" and "Alejandro", Lady Gaga addresses Jesus Christ, and dresses up as a church nun respectively. However, in the rest of the video, she wears extremely skimpy clothing, has seductive males as back up dancers suggesting sexual motives. Another contradicting video is "Paparazzi", where she is wearing a jumpsuit with Mickey Mouse patterns all over, symbolizing innocence, while killing her boyfriend as a revenge for throwing her off the balcony at the beginning of the video.

Lady Gaga favors the exaggerated makeup in all her music videos. She sports the dark and heavy eyeliner, stresses on the obvious fake eyelashes, and makes her face look like a character in horror movies. Gaga's props and costumes are also very uniquely chosen. In "Telephone" featuring Beyonce Knowles, the video was shot in a jail, and Lady Gaga has opened beer cans in her hair as hair curlers. Later on in the video, she is also wearing sunglasses made of cigarettes, and is naked with nothing but a police "DO NOT CROSS" tape covering the important body parts.

Lady Gaga has an immensely large range of ideas throughout her 45 songs in her career so far. She has no set theme for her music. As she makes more music and shoots more videos, her costumes will always be bizarre, exotic and provocative.
